Babies, babies, everywhere...

So, I saw a statistic somewhere that said the average US birth weight has gone down a couple ounces over the last decade.  From average weight of around 7 lbs 9 oz to around 7 lbs 7 oz.  Which is something I totally wasn't expecting to read, as the babies I know are all huge (or at least a healthy size.)

So, in February, I had a friend who gave birth to a healthy 8 lb 11 oz baby girl, Zazie.  She was the first in our playgroup to have a baby this year.  Then my sister gave birth to my beautiful niece, Lena, who was a good 7 lbs 14 ounces.  Then the rest of our playgroup started having babies (there was seriously something in the water, as our entire playgroup has had their third child this year!)  Juliette was born at the end of September and was 7 lbs 15 oz.  Then Anneke was born in October at 8 lbs 4 oz (smaller than Gilbey by 3 oz and bigger than Dillon by 5 oz.)  And little Sean was born this morning, weighing in at 12 lbs 4 oz.  Yep, you read that right.  And he was born naturally, no c-section.

So, we have 5 babies born this year.  All well above the new (or even the old) average weight.  So, in my playgroup (plus sister) the average weight of our babies is 9 lbs even.  If I take Sean out of the average, it is 8 lbs 3 oz.  Well above the average size baby, both old statistics and new.  We must just grow them big here in Northern RI (plus Portland, OR).  Either that or we are really just the odd balls and soon we should be meeting people with 5 and 6 lb babies to even us out.

Anyway, I just want to throw a huge Congratulations! out to my friends and family that have added children to their family this year.  No matter their size, they are adorable and loved!  And I can't wait to have playgroup with 12 kids running around this year!
