We met with a mortgage guy tonight and things went well. We are approved for more money than we could realistically spend, but that seems to be the norm for mortgages these days. The guy we saw walked us through our options and gave us the pros and cons of each. We'll have to wait until we find a house to make the final decision on what mortgage we'll end up with, depending on rates at the time. He was very thorough and answered all our questions.
We still want to check around and find out what at least one other lender can do, but we are getting there. Our guy's assistant will write up the preapproval letter tomorrow and hopefully we will have it in hand by the weekend. I can't wait to start looking at houses!
Next step is to call a realtor. We have one in mind- the father of a girl I went to high school with. He gave us the lender's name and I have his number to give him a call. I think it will be nice to work with someone who I've known for years. I trust that he will help us find the perfect home for us and help us navigate the whole process. I'll give him a call tomorrow and if all goes well, we'll start touring homes next week!

It will be nice to work with someone you know, but don't be afraid to ditch him if you don't like what he's doing! We know lots and lots of people who went with friends-of-the-family, only to find out (sadly) that they just weren't very good at their job! You might consider talking to at least one other person who comes recommended by friends who've worked with them.
